Male Charged as a Result of a Fatal Pedestrian Hit and Run Collision

On July 26th, 2014 at approximately 2:00 AM the Wood Buffalo RCMP received a complaint call of a hit and run motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Initial reports indicated a male pedestrian had been struck while crossing the street in front of the 711 gas station located at 10002 Franklin Avenue, Fort McMurray, AB. Reports indicated the male victim had serious injuries and the suspect vehicle had fled the scene.

The male victim was transported to an Edmonton area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Out of respect for the victim and his family, the victims name will not be released.

With the assistance of a witness, the Wood Buffalo RCMP located the suspect vehicle and the driver a short time later.

As a result of the investigation, 28 year old Gaetan Henri Joseph CARTIER of Fort McMurray, AB was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Failing to stop or remain at the scene of an accident involving an injured person – Section 252 of the Criminal Code.
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm- Section 249(3) of the Criminal Code.
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm- Section 221 of the Criminal Code

CARTIER did not speak to bail and was held in custody until his first court appearance on July 28th, 2014.
