Fort McMurray, Alta. – Alberta roads typically experience an influx of drivers during long weekends and this Canada Day weekend was no exception. Between Friday, June 28 and Monday, July 1, Wood Buffalo Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) conducted traffic safety operations and as a result, issued 179 Violation Tickets under various legislation to long weekend travellers.

In addition to violation tickets, ITU members also laid 3 Criminal Code charges over the weekend including Operation while impaired by alcohol, Failure or refusal to comply with a demand and Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Wood Buffalo ITU is comprised of provincial traffic Sheriffs and RCMP provincial traffic officers, and was formed so that both departments could combine resources to deliver a more effective service to the public. ITU focus on reducing the number of fatal and serious injury collisions on Alberta roadways, and to make the driving experience safer for all users of the road.
