Fort McMurray, Alberta: The Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to update our residents on an Alberta RCMP initiative called Crime Reduction Strategy. In the past few months the Wood Buffalo Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) has developed a mandate and supports Alberta RCMP priorities. This includes targeting areas with an increased rate in crime that has been identified by the police and public. At the moment one of the identified areas in Wood Buffalo for extra enforcement is in the downtown core.

The Wood Buffalo Crime Reduction Unit has been very active in the month of September.
• 13 Warrants of Arrest were executed, including repeat offenders.
• Six subjects were charged with a total of 15 breaches. These breaches include multiple repeat offenders and located in areas with higher crime rates.

This was accomplished, in part with proactive patrols.
• Over 70 compliance checks were completed on repeat offenders to ensure court orders are being respected. As a result, 7 charges were laid on individuals found failing to Comply with Conditions imposed by the Court.
• Additional proactive patrols of hotspots led to further criminal investigations including: drug possession, impaired by drug, possession for the purpose of trafficking and a possession of property obtained by crime investigations.

The Crime Reduction Unit provides service to the whole municipality. CRU assisted other sections in the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment. They also worked closely with downtown merchandise stores employees to ensure a safer downtown and enhanced police presence. These police officers are serving the community in a proactive capacity, and are dedicated to crime reduction.
