Wood Buffalo RCMP: Highway 63 Closed in Both Directions   UPDATE #3

March 23, 2018

Fort McMurray, Alberta:  The north bound lane will remain restricted to a single lane until further notice.  The right hand lane for north bound traffic will be closed while road crews continue to work to remove the contaminants from the affected areas on Highway 63, approximately 50 kms south of Fort McMurray. Clean up crews will be working during day light hours over the weekend. Please drive safely and proceed with caution when passing workers.

A further update will follow when Highway 63 has completely reopened.

BACKGROUND:

March 20, 2018

Fort McMurray, Alberta:  The south bound lanes of Highway 63 are open to traffic.  The north bound lane will be restricted to a single lane until further notice.  The crews have successfully transferred the ammonia, and have removed the semi truck and two tankers from the scene. The diesel spill has been cleaned from the highway. The crews are currently working on repairing and removing the road grader from the scene. Clean up crews will remain on scene, on Highway 63, approximately 50 kms south of Fort McMurray, for an undetermined amount of time. Emergency services personnel will be assisting as required, so please drive safely and proceed with caution.

A further update will follow when Highway 63 has completely reopened.

UPDATE #1

Fort McMurray, Alberta: Emergency services will be opening the south bound lane of Highway 63 to north and south traffic.  The north bound lane will remain closed until further notice.  Emergency services personnel will be on scene directing traffic, so please drive safely and avoid areas that are closed.

There were no injuries as a result of the collision, and the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.  Further updates will follow when Highway 63 is completely open.

Fort McMurray, Alberta: On March 19th, 2018 at approximately 2:30 pm, there was a collision involving a semi tanker truck and a road grader.  The collision is 50 kms south of Fort McMurray on Highway 63.  The semi was carrying two tankers of ammonia, which are leaking.  As a result, Highway 63 is closed.

Traffic moving both north and south is being diverted to Highway 881.  Please avoid the area until further notice.
