Wood Buffalo RCMP uses technology to help locate an individual in distress

Fort McMurray, Alberta: On September 27, 2018, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a 911 call for assistance regarding an individual in distress in the area of Biggs Avenue and Nixon Street in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The exact location of the individual was unknown. The officers were creative and decided to utilize a thermal imagery system to assist in looking in the dark and wooded areas to help locate the individual.

Quickly, they located an individual who was unresponsive and in medical distress. The individual was also not dressed for the cold weather conditions. The RCMP officers acted rapidly and provided emergency first aid. The individual was transported to the hospital and received care.

The RCMP would like to thank the citizens of Wood Buffalo for providing information to assist in keeping our community safe. “This one call saved someone’s life,” says Inspector Eric Stebenne, Operations Officer at Wood Buffalo Detachment. “Our officers along with EMS then took it from there.”

The name of the individual cannot be provided due to privacy.
