Fort McMurray, Alta. – Wood Buffalo RCMP has seen a staggering increase of stolen vehicles and theft from vehicles in recent months. In solely the month of July there has been 38 reported thefts from vehicles and 49 vehicles stolen. RCMP urge residents to take action in helping prevent these crimes.

“Crimes of this nature are increasing exponentially in our region and we truly need the help of residents in changing that,” says Inspector Shane Ramteemal of Wood Buffalo RCMP. “In the majority of these thefts, keys were left in the car or ignition, and valuables were left in plain sight by owners, this makes your vehicle an easy target.”

Residents can do their do diligence in protecting their vehicles by ensuring vehicles are kept locked while unattended and valuables such as cell phones, wallets, cash, tools, are removed or out of sight. Never keep keys or firearms stored in a vehicle, or keep a vehicle running while unattended.

Wood Buffalo RCMP urge the public to report any information in relation to incidents of this nature. Please contact Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4040.
